One of the prettiest EVER 1940s tilt topper hats! And a rare label. A quite scarce hat, made by the fabulous male milliner ROBERT DUDLEY of New York. Serious millinery collectors know that Dudley’s hats almost never come to market, and this one is really special. Very feminine and frilly, a true Victorian revival style, loaded with pretty trims of deep and soft pink roses and pale blue ostrich plumes. Under the trims is a base of deep magenta pink millinery cloth with a pebble texture and slight luster. In back is a lovely pattered horsehair lace “flap” that serves to secure the hat to the head at the required sever forward tilted angle. Robert has finished the hat with a cloud of luxh black French silk veiling that goes all the way to the chin. Meant to be worn very much on the forehead and over the eye, with the trims cascading forward. The photos just cannot capture just how beautiful this hat really is, nor could I quite capture the soft vintage hues. Intage Completely hand sewn, of course. I show the hat on 2 heads… One is a full sized, adult millinery head. The other is a smaller, 3/4 scale counter display. This hat was very expensive when new. Robert Dudley started out quietly in a small side salon in New York City, calling himself a “amker of hats”, offering his one of a kind creations to the best of Manhattan society who came to him for private designs. He was a bit of “well kept secret” until word got out and and his beautiful and unusual hats were a huge success. During WWII he was known for making outrageous hats out of ordinary materials. I find his work on par and often better than Lilly Dache, Reboux, 1930s era Schiapaelli, or any Paris Haute Mode modiste of the day. Hats with the genuine Robert Dudley label can be found in the world’s best museums and private collections, and are quite rare to find today. And those are not as nice as this one.
