A quite lovely antique hat, with very distinctive colors that were adopted and worn by the suffragettes in the women’s right to vote movement of the early 20th century. Lavender purple, chartreuse or pale lime green, and cream white. NOTE that the green plume is much greener than it may look in my photo. WWI era, 1916 to 1918. A deep cloche style, the crown is completely covered in ostrich plumes. Looks like at least 6 black plumes as the base, with a wonderful fluffy band of cream, purple and pale green plumes. Note that the green plume is greener than it looks here, it is a true kiwi green hue. While not all women could make it known they favored votes for women, wearing these colors was sometimes a subtle way to get the message across. The base of the hat is stiff net, wire and silk. Inside is a millinery bandeau with the original tag “De’Leon Bandeau, 1916″. This was added to adapt the hat to the wearer’s head as it is adjustable. Lining is black silk and maker’s millinery label is Smith, Peoria Illinois. Large size, sits low on the face. I was not sure exactly how this should sit on the head, so I show it several ways. Has some age, and the interior is very worn (see photo) with parts of the silk netting and lining gone. But the hat is sturdy overall and certainly could be worn. A scarce find with these delightful colors! Wonderful for historical dress! I show the hat on a full sized millinery head, the head is not included.
