A quite scarce and especially lovely, genuine Victorian hat. Dashing and daring for its time, circa 1870s to early 1880s. Made of a thick black straw braid, done in a wonderful masculine Postilion style. Also referred to as a Rubens, Van Dyke , or riding coachman style. Very sporty and perfect for a ladies bicycling or archery. Tall narrow crown and narrow slightly upturned brim. The trims are gorgeous. Lush French silk velvet ribbons in a plaid and wide bold stripe pattern of amber russet gold and dark blue tones. A pair of real bird wings in front in shades of gray, brown and russet orange. In front is a topaz glass faceted jewel millinery pin (sewn on) and tow long black glass hat pins on the side. Some age, but the hat is nice overall and certainly could be worn. A scarce find that is a great display or for historical dress events. I show the hat on a full sized millinery head, the head is not included. I feel I have priced this hat well below market value.
