It doesn’t get much better than this: purple pinstripe silk & velvet hat circa 1910’s with celestial buckle and giant bow.. It isn’t everyday that you find a hat of this age, in this condition. But, then to add the rarities of color and design choices and (kiss) it is everything to me.. A large-brimmed hat sometimes referred to as a picture or peach basket hat (although this one is not nearly as adorned as a picture hat or shaped quite like a peach basket hat, so it’s somewhere in-between). This hat is handmade, constructed of a triple wire base or brim, each wrapped in purple silk with black pinstripe (and finished in the tiniest of stitches). The crown is slightly enlarged make room for hair, please! Coifs and updos and also covered in the same fabric silk, with a band of silk at the bottom. Planted at the hat’s front is an oversized purple velveteen bow, with the most incredible cut steelwork buckle. This buckle (which is beautifully made and in just as amazing condition as the rest of this hat) features small, silver faceted steel brads in swirling shapes, flanked by teardrops and peppered with two little crescent moons. The inside crown is lined with a sleek black acetate type fabric and the brim’s underside is finished in the same purple velvet. All in all, I can’t put into words how wonderful I think this hat is -it’s not the most lavish, but it is slightly odd and I think it’s fabulous. No labels or maker’s marks. Overall condition is near mint with a very tiny 1/4 spot of missing velvet pile or nap from side of one bow ear, plus very slight bend to one side of edge wire. Please review photographs for full details. Please note: this hat will be sent with a large hat box for storage, box is not original and hat should be stored carefully. I suggest keeping the bows & crown stuffed with tissue to maintain shape (some acid-free tissue will be sent with hat as well). 22 3/8 around inner rim. 15 6/8 diameter across hat brim from side to side. 15 diameter across hat from front to back. 5 1/2 hat height without bow. 8 1/2 total hat height including bow. 4 steelwork buckle height.
