A grand and opulent hat! A large antique Edwardian wide brim hat with 3 huge and extra wide, fluffy and creamy ostrich plumes. Genuine antique hat, circa 1910 to 1912, the era of The Titanic and early Downton Abbey days. A sturdy black straw braid with a deep oval crown and wide brim which is swathed in a ring of cream colored frilly ostrich plumes all around, plus 3 very wide ivory colored plumes which cover the entire top of the hat. There is a large poufy sash bow of French silk taffeta in a pale purple and cream, with a gorgeous, large, fancy patterned silver millinery buckle in the center. The hat with the plumes measures 24 long front to back, quite huge. Straw hat itself is 17 1/2″ by 14 12/” with a deep crown. This hat reminds me of those found in the Edwardian French hand colored prints of Paris hats of 1911 of Caroline Reboux, Talbot, and Georgette chapeaux. I wonder if this one is French in origin too? Certainly worthy of any modiste in the Rue de la Paix district of Paris. Large head size, the inner circumference is 23 around. No lining, it has gone missing or was removed. There is a long glass topped hatpin hiding in there as well. A grand example of this scarce style, and a great find for the hat and millinery collector. It looks best when worn with a head of full hair, like the upswept Edwardian Girl hair style. I show the hat on a full sized millinery head, the head is not included.
