The Daphne Corbin Hat Collection is famous around the world and has been shown in many exhibitions, written about in books and magazines and many newspaper articles. Daphne is one of the worlds leading authorities on historic hats, she gives talks to interested groups for charity and opens her private collection to collectors, curators and fashion students from around the world by appointment. Irene of New York. Irene of New York, the couture millinery firm in New York, was started by Irene Stone after WWII. Robert (Bob) Greene was hired as chief designer in 1948. Although Irene Stone had little to do with the business after 1969, the name remained Irene of New York until its doors closed in 1977. The firm operated out of premises off Madison Avenue at 16 East 52nd Street until 1970 or so when it was forced by changes in the market to move to premises in the millinery district on West 39th street. All of the hats, regardless of whether for wholesale or retail clients, from the Irene line, the slightly less expensive Rivera line, or the line called Bob Greene for Irene of New York were handmade at these locations. The hand beading was done by a team of Cuban seamstresses. Well known private clients included the doyenne of beauty products Estee Lauder, New York politician Bella Abzug, and Elizabeth Taylor to name but a few. The materials and workmanship are impeccable. This attention to detail and its attendant cost was ultimately the downfall of the business, as was a general decline in the wearing of hats on a daily basis. Irene of New York hats, particularly the 1950-60s cocktail caps, are simply works of art. They were adorned with rich embellishments of rhinestones, beads and exquisite embroidery all upon the finest of brocades and velvets. Collectors the world over covet Irene of New York millinery, simply because of the exquisite detail, the richness of the materials used and the fine quality and details of the design. We are very grateful for this firsthand account of the millinery firm Irene of New York, provided by Jody (Greene) Wilkie and Lisa Greene, granddaughters and daughters of Irene Stone and H.
