NOTE: Since several have asked: The black straw braid hat base itself is actually quite tiny, a small shape that measures only 3 1/2″ by 4″, making this a true “doll” or “toy” tilt hat. Silk ruffles add the volume. Combs have been added at a late date. Label shot and interior are shown below. So very alluring and quite striking. A beautiful, vintage very early 1940s hat from legendary French American milliner and fashion designer, Lilly Dache’. Custom made by Lilly herself, probably one of a kind, this stunning Tilt topper is profusely adorned with large ruffled puffs of French silk ribbons in magenta pink and black. The straw hat itself is actually quite small, (the ribbons give it most of the volume) a mini scale “half sphere” shape of finest narrow Milan straw braid in charcoal black. This was often referred to as a “doll” or “toy” hat due to its small scale, although the ribbons pouf out to add a lot of eye candy and width. Meant to be worn at a decided and severe forward TILT, and in back is a silk ribbon covered O Ring (wired) which would be placed under/over the hair to hold the hat on the head and keep it at the tilt of your choosing. (the comb is a more recent addition, I think). A wonderful gift for the hat collector, or for yourself to wear to the next revival event such as Goodwood, VLV, cocktails at the Ritz, or any special time you just want to get attention. Black and silver silk label is Lilly Dache’, Paris New York, 78 East 56th Street, New York. Pretty enough to wear all year round. I show the hat on a full sized, adult millinery head. Head is not included. I can see Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, or Rosalind Russell wearing this hat, can’t you? The small comb in back might be an add-on, if so it was done many years ago, and it is securely hand sewn to the O ring.
