FRENCH 1950s MAUD ROSER, PARIS Spiky EGRET FEATHER Wig HAT DIOR Milliner WILD
Definitely exotic and a bit daring… Not for the shy! The entire supple black fur-felt base is covered in expertly hand sewn, glossy dark black egret plume flues that spike out forward over the face for a dramatic effect. This chapeau is what some might refer to as a “wig” hat, as it covers the entire head and mimics a head of glossy hair, although it also reminds me of monkey fur or monkey hair as well. There is even a “part” in back for a realistic natural effect. Fits almost any head as it expands to fit. Designed by Maud Roser, and you seasoned collectors are familiar with her work and her history as a premier milliner of the 40s and 50s. Perfect with the little black dress, long black opera gloves, a chunky rhinestone bracelet, and vintage cigarette holder (just for show). A wonderful gift for the hat collector, or for yourself to wear to the next revival event such as Goodwood, VLV, The Kentucky Derby, tea at the Ritz or any special time you just want to get attention. I show the hat on a full sized, adult millinery head. Head is not included. Maude Roser was a famous millinery designer in her own right, who was chosen by the young Christian Dior to design and make the hats for his first Haute Couture collections. She also was a favorite of Jacques Fath who often paired her hats with his Haute Couture garments. Her hats often graced the covers of American Vogue magazine and French Vogue, paired with Fath or Dior suits and dresses of the late 1940s and very early 1950s. A rare and very special chapeau. I can see Audrey Hepburn wearing this hat, and I believe she did wear one very similar in one of her films or Vogue photo shoots. Edges of hat are finished in black silk velvet piping. Cream and pink silk label LABEL has some light wear and a wrinkle and I have a hard time reading the street name and the street number…. I can clearly read MAUDE ROSER and then under that 60 Rue Ponthieu? The background pattern of the label is a squiggly pink design, making it hard to read it, so I show a close up photos for you. This closely resembles a label Roser also used (for only 1 year) for a limited amount of her authorized reproductions, but I looked close and there is no other writing on the label, I looked under a magnifying glass. This one is just hard to see! The label is intact and has not been cut. PLEASE SEE OUR AUCTIONS FOR MORE ANTIQUE and VINTAGE HATS, Clothing, AND MORE…. PLEASE SEE THE PHOTOS as they serve as part of the condition description. Please ask if you have questions, as hats are not returnable unless I have made some gross error in my description. Thank you for understanding. I charge actual costs or less. Thank you so much.
