The hat is small in scale, almost a miniature fedora, but meant for an adult woman, and so adorable! This is SO stylish and so smart! The perfect vintage little red riding hat! Vintage 1940s hat from legendary French American milliner and fashion designer, Lilly Dache’. From a fine Beverly hills estate, this hat was all hand sewn and custom made in Lilly’s New York salon, probably one of a kind. This stunning Tilt topper is what I would call a tiny fedora in shape, a red riding hat with a true Victorian equestrian flair. Made of very supple and thick French fur-felt in a rich cherry red color. The crown is wrapped in wide and dense silk satin ribbons, which in back are pleated and draped beautifully, and then the ribbons lace through the bottom of the brim to gracefully drape down the back of the head. For a trim, Lilly added two glazed or painted black feathers that add the perfect jaunty touch. It reminds me a lot of a Victorian riding hat, wouldm’t you say? These small scaled hats were often referred to as “doll” or “toy” hats. Measures a mere 7″ by 10″. Meant to be worn at a decided and severe forward TILT. A wonderful gift for the hat collector, or for yourself to wear to the next revival event such as Goodwood, VLV, or any special time you just want to get attention. Silk label is Lilly Dache’, Paris New York, 78 East 56th Street, New York. I show the hat on a full sized, adult millinery head. It is smaller than it looks on her head. I can see Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, or Rosalind Russell wearing this hat, can’t you? There is a string sewn to the hat for a strap, but it is not elastic.
