THIS FABULOUS AND VERY RARE HAT CAME FROM THE HOME OF THE STEP DAUGHTER TO ETHEL MCCARTY WHOSE EX HUSBAND BUILT THE BEVERLY WILSHIRE HOTEL. SHE WAS THE SECOND WIFE TO HIM. WHEN SHE BECAME A WIDOW SHE RE-MARRIED THE DAUGHTER’S FATHER. THE MCCARTY’S AND JAMES OVIATT WHO CREATED THIS HAT WERE GREAT FRIENDS IN LOS ANGELES DURING THAT ERA AND IN FACT JAMES OVIATT OPENED A HAT SHOP IN THE BEVERLY WILSHIRE HOTEL BECAUSE OF WALTER MCCARTY. JAMES OVIATT DID NOT MARRY UNTIL 1945 WHEN HE SAW MARY, A 22 YEAR OLD WORKING IN HIS STORE AND IMMEDIATELY ASKED HER TO MARRY HIM WHICH SHE DID. WHEN ETHEL WAS MARRIED TO WALTER MCCARTY SHE AND MARY OVIATT BECAME FRIENDS. THE HAT IN IN WONDERFUL CONDITION WITH BLACK BIRD FEATHERS METICULOUSLY LAID IN HORIZONTAL ROWS WITH BLACK AND SILVER RHINESTONES ON THE POINTED TOP. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL OVIATT’S LABEL. I COULD NOT FIND ONE WOMEN’S HAT MADE BY JAMES OVIATT AS HE SPECIALIZED IN MENS CLOTHING. THE HAT IS 11 1/2 AROUND THE INSIDE. IT COMES IN THE BOX SHOWN BUT IS NOT ORIGINAL AND IT IS QUILTED SATIN.
