Absolutely incredible antique, all original Art Deco 1920s hat. The hat is a deep plump cloche turban, done in the style of what could be considered Egyptian Revival, or Orientalism, or perhaps Russian kokoshnik headdresses, all of which were strong influences of Art Deco fashion and millinery. Incredible workmanship, the hat is a firm foundation covered in hand made Milan fine straw braid and black silk & straw leaves which overlap in a dramatic geometric and Deco pattern. On each side is a large bouquet of brightly colored millinery flowers, in reds, yellows and tiny sweet pale pink and purple morning glories, with hand painted green wired leaves. Draping on each side is a swath of silk netted “tassels” which cascade to the shoulders and can open to reveal a lovely design. This is an “important” hat and worthy of the best museum collection. One of a kind and… In 1923 in Paris, according to an article in the 1923 Illustrated Milliner, milliners were creating hats based on Chinese, Buddhist, and Mongolian headdress so I might date it to 1923. The hat is a large head size too. Reminds me of something Sonia Delaunay would have designed and worn, especially in the overlapping leaf pattern and vivid tribal colors. Or perhaps Anna Pavlova or a dancer in the Ballet Russe! Museum worthy, and an important example of International influences in 1920s fashion and hats. The head is not included, The hat has good structure, a firm inner foundation so it keeps the shape, Straw is fine quality Italian braid, supple and lovely. Inside circumference is approximately 23. This hat was made in Paris, although the silk lining is almost totally gone, so no attribution can be made now.
