This late 1890s-early 1900s hat is in excellent condition and has some exquisite details which set it apart from the average antique black hat. Both crown and brim made of fine black straw or tightly woven horsehair, the 2 1/2 inch brim is covered in finely patterned black chantilly lace which has dainty scallops hanging just over the edge. The crown has lace adorned with black sequins, and there are strips of black celluloid circles on both sides, two rows on one side of the hat and a single row on the other. Two large black ostrich feathers run across the top of the crown. The lining is black cotton and only extends around the edge of the brim, and the original black elastic cord used to secure the hat to the hairdo is still there. Although this hat only measures a petite 21 inches around the head, it can also fit larger sizes by coyly’perching’ to the front with the hairdo worn up in a bun behind. All the elements of this hat are in very good condition and the woven straw or horsehair itself is still flexible and malleable.
