This is a very desirable, rare and remarkable chic c. 1932 Flapper Art Deco style pastel colored stripes silky cloche hat with wide brown knot by notable French. Haute Couture Milliner and Modiste Suzanne Talbot, with original Box from Vera Borea (dated 1961) for loyal customer Madame Chedru, a lady related to British-born Princess de Rohan, exclusively designed and hand made for Paris Maison Vera Borea, the French luxury fashion house founded in 1931 in Paris by Countess Borea de Buzzaccarini Regoli with assistance of her friend, the Princess de Rohan, and one of the very first Haute Couture Salons to offer luxury sportswear and special occasions clothing for women. La Maison produced high-end garments for ski, tennis, golf, beach, boating, motoring, biking and hunting, along stylish day garments and striking evening dresses, accessories, shoes and jewelry. More information about SuzanneTalbot, The Queen of Milliner´s, and Vera Borea below the description. This lady was a close friend and loyal customer of Vera Borea, and she had a good number of garments from her boutique ranging from the 1930s to the 1960s. This hat in particular was designed for her But we cannot be sure if it was made in the year the box reads (probably not)but earlier in the early 1930s, since the former owner couldn´t confirm it and the style and tag is consistent with both eras. Our opinion is the hat is consistent with the Jazz era, and the fact this was kept in the box sent from Borea´s Boutique in Paris included in the lot in 1961 confirms its Provenance, authenticity, loyalty and trust to this Haute Couture Maison. This is undoubtedly an incredible find!!! This stunning hat is a fine example of the best French ladies-tailoring that became popular in both suits and headwear, clearly inspired in the 1920s Decó movement. The hat is a little sculpture, a Work of Art in itself. This spring-summer cloche it is made of fine and striking glazed pastel colored silky fabric and is a semi-structured hat, it is soft but stiff and it adapts and hugs your head, sitting low over the eyes to achieve the perfect Flapper Decó look. It is hand and machine made, and the most amazing features are: the exclusive fabric, the wavy pastel pattern, the tiny stitching all over the crown and brim, the spiral stitching beginning at the center top of the crown made with bronze silk floss thread, and of course, the design. The hat is decorated with a very unique brown fabric tie shaped band around the crown that it is both a wonder of technique and originality, since it is fully finished with tiny brown stitches to achieve a textured look. This is the kind of feature that distinguishes Haute Couture garments from, casual clothing. The lovely wavy brim may be adjusted so you can wear the hat to your liking. The fine covered wired brim gives stiffness and style. Dark chocolate brown grosgrain ribbon sweatband. Marking: Label inside:’SUZANNE TALBOT / chez / VERA BOREA / PARIS. The refined manner of sculpting subtly this close-fitting hat with the crown of the hat in satin top-stitched in a concentric spiral is indicative of the highest French craftsmanship. Talbot was known for her attention to structure and restraint in decoration, both of which are highlighted in this hat, with its beautiful and singular form, executed with obvious skill and forethought. While the hat retains the heavy feeling and rich texture of its precedents, the shape is strictly controlled, features which can been seen to respond to the desire for more practical apparel and a cleaner, more modern look. Her work is extraordinarily rare and very few examples survive outside museum collections, even less designs like this for Vera Borea. Suzanne Talbot´s creations may be admired at the V&A Museum, the NY MET and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The BOX is very scarce. The box includes the lid and body, and it is squared and made of brown hard cardboard of the best quality and stiffness that resembles wood on the lid. There are two labels attached to it: one in the box from La Poste fully hand written and filled by Mrs. Borea or someone from the Salon; and the label on the lid also handwritten where you can read Madame Chedru´s address and Vera Borea´s name and address to the left top corner of the paper. This is a historical and superb hat to display or wear. Flapper hats or cloche hats are highly popular with vintage fashion collectors, and designers and couture houses to look out for include Coco Chanel, Molyneux and Lanvin, along with milliners such as Madame Agnes and Suzanne Talbot. A famous Parisian Haute Couture milliner and modiste who´s among the most renowned designers of the early 20. Century, including Caroline Reboux, Paul Poiret, Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin or Madame Agnes. Her shop was located at 14 rue Royale in Paris and apart from creating wonderful hats for a selective private clientele -she was named Paris High Society Favorite Milliner-, she also designed for high end stores and Couture ateliers like Vera Borea. During the late Victorian era and early decades of the 20. Century she designed fabulous clothing, hats, and introduced perfumes around 1924. Famous milliners Lilly Dache and Jeanne Lanvin were seamstresses for Talbot in the late 1890s and into the early 1900s. Her clients include; Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson, Hon. Daisy Fellowes and her daughter La Comtesse de Castéja, Mrs. Sidney Wood, Helen Lyons, Mrs. Courtlandt Richardson and her daughter Mimi. Actresses Marchal Arlette and Capucine, and Princess Fawzia, the oldest member of the Egyptian Royal Family, who wasn’t only the princess of Egypt or just the princess -then queen- of Iran. But also one of the most stylish women in the world in the 40’s and early 50’s. She is known for frequenting Suzanne Talbot and ordering her 100 hats, just because she decided to wear hats. Her stunning apartment located in Rue de Lota was designed in 1922 by famous architect. Urniture designer and a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture, Eileen Gray, and it is one of her most celebrated interiors. Gray’s design for Talbot used objects that directly referenced exotic cultures: in the living room, she used African-inspired stools and zebra hides, along with her Pirogue Day Bed, made of brown lacquer and silver leaf, whose form was inspired by Polynesian dugout canoes. Two of Gray’s other most famous designs were also created for the Talbot apartment. One is the Dragons chair, a fantastical sculptural armchair that is almost Gaudi-esque in its form, a visual link between Art Deco and the Art Nouveau style that had preceded it by a decade (image 6, also visible in image 5). The other famous design is the Bibendum chair, aptly named for the Michelin Man. Talbot was, no doubt, a lady of taste and talent. French fashion house founded in 1931 in Paris, France by Countess Borea de Buzzaccarini Regoli with assistance of her friend, the British-born Princess de Rohan. The Countess located her haute-couture salon at 29 rue dArtois, at the very end of Faubourg Saint-Honoré. With growing success, the House established in 1935 a two-story shop at 376 rue Saint-Honoré which remained open until 2007. Vera Borea was one of the very first houses to offer luxury sportswear for women. The house produced high-end garments for ski, tennis, golf, beach, boating, motoring, biking and hunting, along day and evening dresses, accessories, shoes and jewelry. Known for expertly tailored sports, travel suits and dresses, Vera Borea came to fame with its innovative designs that promoted a new lifestyle, and acceptance of fashion sportswear as appropriate wear for other social occasions. Countess de Regoli, a passionate sportswoman. Born and raised in Italian Dolomites, was frustrated by a lack of clothing that was chic yet comfortable and began to design sportswear, négligées and swimming suits featuring special knitting stitch invented by her grand mother. With a no-nonsense, hands-on approach, Countess de Regoli, an avid skier, swimmer and golfer, tried out her creations on herself before she offered them for sale, and often modelled them for clients. The designs appeared smart enough to be worn in town, reuniting sports and town wardrobes. Borea became soon the favorite destination on both sides of the Atlantic for women going for the new relaxed lifestyle. American department stores snapped her designs and the House became the reference for garments that were simple in line but unusual in materials and cut, modern and practical. Her creations often featured details that, beyond looking good, served a practical purpose and could be wore on multiple occasions such as after tennis, for motoring or on a shipboard. Prestigious fashion magazines featured Vera Borea’s creations alongside Hermés. Lanvin, Chanel and Patou, and her designs were soon copied with those of Vionnet, Schiaparelli, Lanvin and Patou. Scores of Americans soon joined the regular French clients at Boreas Paris salon, including famous sports women Helen Wills and Mademoiselle Suzanne Lenglen, and Hollywood movie stars such as Joan Bennett. Until the retirement of Countess de Regoli in 1962, Vera Borea was considered as one of the grand Parisian couturiers of its days and was a member of Parisian Haute.
