Original 1940s WWII Felt hat – medium size. This hat is from my own personal collection, which has been exhibited in Museums, Fashion Shows and has also appeared on the Antiques Roadshow. Sadly, lack of space is reluctantly forcing sale of part of my collection. The Merrimac Hat Company was a huge concern in America. The company ran from the 1860s through until the 1950s when the daily wearing of hats declined. Merrimac were design leaders and could always be relied upon to add beautiful touches to their designs – like the scalloped edge on this beautiful kelly green hat. By the way, these scalloped edged were done with steel tools which were hammered so a time consuming process! Merrimac hats could be found in all of the leading fashion magazines of the day (Vogue, Harpers Bazaar etc) and also graced the catwalks. This is an iconic hat shape of the day – a cross between a fedora and trilby with an iconic shaped crown found throughout the designs of WWII – Priscilla Lane for example in Arsenic and Old Lace wears something quite similar. Condition is Used – this is in very good vintage condition. However, for an item that is almost 80 years old, it doesn’t get away without a few small issues. Firstly, this really could benefit from a good steam and brushing, which will add to the brightness of the hat although it is bright as it! There is a very tiny amount of discolouration on the inner band, which is not make up but most likely age marks. There is a tiny indentation like a pinprick at the top of the crown which does not penetrate the felt. Hardly noticeable when the hat is being worn – it is only mentioned for complete accuracy and honesty. There are a couple of minute grazes to the felt and a tiny lighter area on the brim which I have also tried to show – again, the hat is so stunning, unless you scrutinise, you are not even going to notice it. I have priced the hat accordingly, taking these into account as well as the rarity. None of these tiny niggles detract and this still remains a stunning and highly wearable hat. Please remember that this item is almost 80 years old and as such is a vintage item going towards antique. It may have an odour – which all vintage clothing acquires over time. I do not believe in shoving fabric conditioner sheets in with items – this does run the risk of damage on delicate garments and frankly, I much prefer the honest fragrance of a timeless piece rather than some hideous chemically induced smell. This item has had a previous life and at least two previous owners! If you want something that is pristine, then this item is not for you. Please examine the images carefully before committing yourself and if in any doubt, please ask questions. I do, in the interests of the environment, reuse clean packaging wherever possible. The carrier will normally be Hermes and is sent signed for – I rarely use the post office unless for a very small parcel.
