Original late 1930s/early 1940s WWII Incredible Chinese Style Hat! This hat is from my own personal collection, which has been exhibited in Museums, Fashion Shows and has also appeared on the Antiques Roadshow. Sadly, lack of space is reluctantly forcing sale of part of my collection. This is the only hat I’ve ever seen that looks like this. It is not for the faint hearted; you really have to have hutzpah to wear it. I did wear it, to Twinwood, and got so many admirers from it and made some amazing friends too! The real magic lies in the label. Way back in the late 1930s, Warner Brothers – the film studios – found a way of increasing their revenue and encouraging more ticket sales in the cinema. The label proudly announces “An original Studio Styles by Warner Brothers Designing Staff, Hollywood”. This makes it an ultra special and rare hat. In all the years of collecting, I have maybe seen about half a dozen of these WWII beauties and I bought 2 of them – this one and a sister also listed. Sadly, I haven’t been able to identify categorically which film this hat appeared in; the one that readily springs to mind is the Charlie Chan series as inspiration – however, those films were made by Fox, not Warners. If anyone can guess or knows for certain, then please let me know! Condition is Used – this is in fair to good vintage condition. Amazingly, there are no marks or discolourations on the inner band from make up but I’m afraid it does have an issue. The label itself is quite discoloured – not a major consideration though as you are not wearing that on the outside! The problem lies with the manufacture of the hat itself. When you block a felt hat, it is wet and stretched by hand onto a block. Unfortunately, this hat was not stretched evenly and this resulted in an area of the felt that is very thin. If you run your fingers inside and outside at the same time, you can feel the differing thicknesses of the felt. Over the years, this has resulted in a hole appearing in the front of the hat. It is not a glaring hole – in fact, because the hat is black, you probably would not even see it when it is being worn. Nonetheless, it is there – so this beautiful old lady needs looking after. This hat is so rare that this fault can be overlooked. It can be repaired but only by an expert milliner – please (unless of course you are that milliner) do not attempt it yourself if you have no knowledge of what to do. This is one of those hats that is a real wrench for me to part with! My price takes into account the issue. Please remember that this item is almost 80 years old and as such is a vintage item going towards antique. It may have an odour – which all vintage clothing acquires over time. I do not believe in shoving fabric conditioner sheets in with items – this does run the risk of damage on delicate garments and frankly, I much prefer the honest fragrance of a timeless piece rather than some hideous chemically induced smell. This item has had a previous life and at least two previous owners! If you want something that is pristine, then this item is not for you. Please examine the images carefully before committing yourself and if in any doubt, please ask questions. I do, in the interests of the environment, reuse clean packaging wherever possible. The carrier will normally be Hermes and is sent signed for – I rarely use the post office unless for a very small parcel.
