Edwardian Hat Brown Velvet Bicorn Ostrich Feather “Superbe” Sz 7 #1498. An brown velvet wide brim Edwardian bicorn hat with a thick curled rusty brown and black ostrich plume. The hat is contructed of a wire frame covered with buckram and then covered entirely with brown silk velvet. The hat has a pointed brim on each side and is turned up in the front and back. The crown of the hat is deep and round, and the size of the hat is size 7. The hat is meant to be worn, as can be seen from the placement of the label and the seam on the back of the lining, with the points out on each side of the head and perhaps worn at a rakish angle as shown. The hat is beautifully made and has the label “Superbe”. The hat is lined with beautiful orange shot turquoise silk which complements the brown silk velvet perfectly. There are no major condition issues with the hat. The hat is not faded. I could find no holes or repairs, and the fabric of the lining is in thick and strong and both the lining and the label look new. Overall it appears that the hat was worn very little, and stored very well over the years. However, the hat is at least 100 years old and there may be minor signs of age related wear. The only minor signs of wear I could find were a handful of tiny rubbed points on the velvet, but not so you can notice. The ostrich plume is shiny and lush and for the most part completely intact.
