Early 1931 LILLY DACHE Art Deco Split Halo Hat Draped Black Felt Cusper Style
I SHOW OVER 12 PHOTOS BELOW….. Please scroll down thank you. I will add better photos later today. A truly rare millinery prize. Vintage very early 1930s hat from Lilly Dache’. Dates to right about 1931 to 1932, with a real early Deco silhouette that looks different from every angle. Supple and buttery black French felt with a velour finish, surrounds most of the face like a halo or wings from the front, with slightly drooping sides and a folded back brim over the forehead that is reminiscent of the late 1920s cloches. Black silk ribbon around the crown. Perfect as it is, but I added a carved bright butterscotch Bakelite leaf brooch/clip which can be moved to any position that suits the fancy. Early hats from Dache’ are extremely rare, most museums do not even have one. Styled to sit towards the back of the head, and fits most lady’s heads, very comfy to wear. Label is Lilly Dache’, Paris New York, 485 Madison Avenue, NY. Halo hats came into fashion in the very early 1930s and later throughout the 1940s, and this is a sort of notched or modified halo. Since it is worn back on the head, the split back is actually necessary to keep the hat from hitting the wearer’s shoulders and back. Looks great worn upside down too, giving it even more of a halo wing effect. (I do not show it this way but is sits fine that way too). A simple shape that captures a moment in millinery fashion of the very early 1930s. I show a couple photos from 1931 with similar styles, while the brim on this hat is not really “droopy” (thin felt but it stays in its shape) it reflects the style well. In the black and white picture, one hat is a Charles James hat and the other is a Rose Valois. (My thanks to Susan Langley for the photos). Defining a hat’s style can often be subjective. There were variations on this popular style. For those who think halo hats are only from the 1940s, or only have open crowns (sorry, not the case), here are a few quotes from Wikipedia that I will let speak for me: Thank you! The halo shape became popular again from the start of the 1930s in both the United States and Europe. It was a distinct move away from the cloche style that was worn low over the brow, as the halo exposed the face and brow, also showing off more elaborate curled hairstyles becoming popular during this era. ” “Halo hats are so new” declared an advert in a US newspaper in 1931″ “In 1933 The Times reviewed the Christmas catalogues, saying: “the new season millinery, with its leading novelty, the’halo’ hat, is specially interesting. There’s something of the angel’s halo and something of the buccaneer’s bravado in its dramatic, folded-back brim. This is to be fair to all interested buyers.
