Well folks, I thought I had seen them all! Ive come across many bird of paradise Millinery Feathers, but this one is by far the best. Its large and very fluffy! Its hard to see the dimensions of the plumes in the photos, but in person, its a very large piece! These plumes were sought after by the wealthiest ladies in the late 1800s and early 1900s on into the 1910s. They were so in demand that the species was nearly decimated all in the name of fashion. In nearly every example of these birds that I have been lucky enough to see and handle in person, I notice how the feathers are actually wired individually so that they can be spread and moved to your desired look! This meticulous handiwork mustve taken hours and hours to wire each feather and then affix them all to a wired base. This was done with full wings, and even the heads were wired! This is a terrific surviving example of craftsmanship from the Victorian and Edwardian Era. You just dont seem then that often in such good shape. This bird even has some of its feathers still curled into shape! Its just a lovely piece. I had planned on affixing it to a blank antique hat, but figured I would leave this to someone else who has longed for these type of feathers. The condition is very good. Both glass eyes are still there. Naturally, there was shedding of some of the feathers, but they have been saved in a ziplock bag that will be included. Its very easy to dab a little clear craft glue on the end of the feather and glue them amongst the numerous wired bunches. They blend in and it looks like they never even fell off! Youll love this so much and it would make for an amazing addition to your feather or millinery collection!
