A magnificent antique Edwardian era hat! Super TALL with marvelous trims. Genuine antique, from the Downton Abbey and Titanic era. The hat is covered in a lovely violet purple silk taffeta, (the color is more violet purple than it looks in photos) with 3 rows of dark purple silk velvet piping to make a souffle toque shape that is youthful yet elegant. Eye popping ostrich plumes on the side….. A huge (and I mean huge) and long tall quadruple plume that is a scarce weeping willow plume, hand ited with extra flues to create a waterfall effect. The head of the plume has added feathers for an extra heavy, bouncy and puffy droop. The plume is sort of soft coffee color, with perhaps a hint of plum in the light. A bouquet of pale purple flowers and a gold gilt ribbon band add the finish. Base is a sturdy felt and wire, with a silk net edge underneath, and a black silk drawstring lining. Large head size, at least 23 or more. This looks like one of those Paris chapeaux from a French millinery folio… Those wonderful hand colored prints of the era. Truly a wonder, and a very scarce style to find intact. A beautiful example of Edwardian French millinery. Very good, clean, from a private collection where it has been well stored and cared for. I show the hat on a full sized millinery head, the head is not included. Looks better when worn perched atop the Victorian hair styles. No ties or streamers.
