Vintage 1950s Bes-Ben pillbox cocktail hat with veil. As one would expect from the famous House of Bes-Ben this is an extraordinary hat. It is formed in a beautiful deep red velvet Phrygian cap style (see notes below) and has brilliant sparkling claw set rhinestone balls all around the shaped brim. Fine tulle netting in two colours drapes from the hat and forms a scarf. There are many breaks in the tulle but it is still serviceable as shown in our images. The interior has side combs to secure the hat for it’s wearer, an inner mesh lining, grosgrain banding and the original milliners Bes-Ben label together with the unique number 717. It is in excellent vintage condition, clean and totally wearable. As mentioned there are breaks in the veiling. It is of one size sitting high on the head secured with inner combs. Not a common style other than elf caps in the 20th century, it is a classic style. Phrygian cap (or Phrygian toque) — one of the earliest hats. Made of felt or soft fabric with a self-flap draped to one side like the liripipe (but not extending down as far). The Phrygian cap came to be known as the symbol of freedom by confusion with a similar cap, the pileus (basically a cone hat, which does not fold over like the Phrygian cap or liripipe). The pileus was worn by freed slaves in ancient Greece and Rome. The Phrygian cap inspired Lilly Dache’s Phrygian turban, a draped tube which folded over into a self-rose, designed to commemorate the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II. Schiaparelli introduced a Phrygian toque in 1936. Lilly Dache made several Phrygian toques beginning in the late 1930s, including a mod version with white leather polka dots circa 1960s.
