1940s Black Tilt Mini Beret With Blue Bows and Long Silk Veil One Size #1440. A 1940s black woven rayon tilt beret with two big sky blue bows on the backstrap and a full French silk veil. The beret is small with an inside grosgrain ribbon hatband and a fold or dimple sewn into the top, and it sits on the front and side of the head so that one size fits most. The backstrap, also woven rayon, is a long V that would be bobby pinned to the back of the hair, and on the backstrap are two large, overlapping, sky blue grosgrain ribbon bows. The bows are attached to the backstrap by their centers, and can be placed so that the bottom bow is on top (as shown) or alternatively with the top bow on top. The full French veil is soft – probably silk or a rayon silk blend – and surrounds the face and extends down around the neck. The veil can be tucked inside the hat if you do not wish to wear it. There were no major issues detected on the hat. The hat is clean inside and out. I could find no holes in the net, and the bows have been removed, gently soaked and replaced on the hat. However, this is a vintage hat that is at least 70 years old, so there may be some minor signs of age related wear that I did not notice or record. Some of the photos have been lightened to show detail but the hat and backstrap is jet black with no fading. The label on the hat is “Holt Renfrew and Company Limited” and the hat was quality made in the USA. A dramatic hat with a very French look.
