Ruthie’s multicolored 1940’s marabou feather hat with veil: Des Moines lore! I bought this hat 35 years ago from a lovely woman who is gone now. She knew I liked hats, and motioned for me to come into her work room and showed it to me and said They say this is the hat Ruthie wore when she met the pope. I knew instantly who she was talking about, and had to have it! There’s no evidence that this is true, or if it was Ruthie’s hat. But friends of friends say it looks just like something she would wear, and she did say in a TV interview that she wore a purple and gold hat when she met Pope John XXIII. Ruthie was a minor celebrity in the 1940s and 50s, known for her… Well read the clippings I’ve attached. Even if it wasn’t her hat, look at the colors on this thing! There is a broken purple feather in the top middle, but it’s still fabulous and wearable. Feathers are still fairly tight and the veil has no tears.
