Vintage Black Velvet Hat Noir 40s Feather Tilt Wide Brim Novelty New Look
Strikingly elegant velvet wide brimmed hat. This can be tilted or worn straight. All black velvet, wide banded rim, creased crown, bow. Additional clip on marabou feather ornament with a black rose. Silk velvet, excellent condition. Some of the bow edge shows a tiny indication of age, wear or moth bites. I’d never had noticed except for my exceptionally good camera and the lighting required to show a black velvet item. The wiring inside the brim can be manipulated to straighten or modify the rim shape. It seems a tad bent in places but I haven’t opened the brim to check- perhaps better left as is or have an expert revive the wire in that channel if you’re all Dita von Teese perfectionist about your vintage, which I can understand. I wore only vintage for decades and truly adore this fabulous hat. I have seen a similar one from this era by Chanel. This was a creation from the United Hatters and Milliners union that began in the late 1800s and as of 1934 were unionized. This is most likely a 1940s/1950s New Look era hat. I link brushed it but the lighting still shows some flecks of dust or reflects white- it is clean, no damage to the velvet- slightly uneven but not sure if it was meant to be perfectly even. Looks great on my mannequin head. Complete any number of vintage looks with this wide brimmed hat.
