Original late 1930s/Early 1940s WWII Tilt Topper Pink! This hat is from my own personal collection, which has been exhibited in Museums, Fashion Shows and has also appeared on the Antiques Roadshow. Sadly, lack of space is reluctantly forcing sale of part of my collection. It is a requisite of collecting hats that you always go for the ones with the wow factor. It may be the most beautiful hat in the world or it may be down to the innovation involved or the amazing styline – there are many reasons why a hat speaks to you. This one has a conversation with you all of its own. It is literally a showstopper. The times I’ve been asked where I got it, who made it, would I sell it. I even made a copy of an Adrian skirt suit just so that I could wear something that would really do it justice! I’ve made good friends through wearing this hat but sadly, it is now time to part (blame Adrian again but this time one of his incredible hats). The hat is in a doughnut style – wear it with panache and a good tilt. Think Veronica Lake and wear it over one eye. It is incredibly beautiful felt – so much so, that the designers at New York Creations were happy to include the stamp of Berkshire w. Fibre, USA on the inside of this baby. The back band – well that is a whole new ball game. It’s made up of interlinked felt flowers in the same pink with a tiny french knot of dark felt in the centre. These hats are one size fits all – and are really flattering to all face shapes and hair colouring. As mentioned, the designers were New York Creations who were responsible for some of the most amazing millinery of the war years. The model number is still inside the hat – always a good sign of quality. Condition is very good, used vintage. This hat has been loved and cherished and above all, worn. It does have a couple of issues however – there are the ubiquitous make up marks around the grosgrain inner band – almost every hat I’ve handled from this era has some form of make up marking from the pancake foundations they used to use! This cannot be seen when the hat is being worn. This has never bothered me at all but it may do some people. You can always try to remove them if you wished, but to be honest, I would rather have them there than run the risk of damaging such a unique hat. There is one spot on the brim and a couple of minute grazes to the felt, but these are not glaring and are hardly noticeable. All in all, the faults above are not detrimental to this beauty. Please remember that this item is almost 80 years old and as such is a vintage item going towards antique. It may have an odour – which all vintage clothing acquires over time. I do not believe in shoving fabric conditioner sheets in with items – this does run the risk of damage on delicate garments and frankly, I much prefer the honest fragrance of a timeless piece rather than some hideous chemically induced smell. This item has had a previous life and at least two previous owners! If you want something that is pristine, then this item is not for you. Please examine the images carefully before committing yourself and if in any doubt, please ask questions. I do, in the interests of the environment, reuse clean packaging wherever possible. The carrier will normally be Hermes – I rarely use the post office unless for a small parcel.
