Original 1940s WWII John Frederics Straw Wide Brim Hat with huge Ostrich Feather
Original 1940s WWII John Frederics straw wide brim hat with huge Ostrich feather. This hat is from my own personal collection, which has been exhibited in Museums, Fashion Shows and has also appeared on the Antiques Roadshow. Sadly, lack of space is reluctantly forcing sale of part of my collection. This hat is from the stables of one of the largest known milliners of the era. John Frederics were in fact a duo made up of John P John (who changed his name several times) and Frederic Hurst. After they split, they became known as Mr John and Mr Fred respectively. John Frederics were millinery royalty – often catering for royalty themselves along with Hollywood top stars of the day – Crawford, Davies, Garbo, West to name a few. Their biggest success in the movies was to produce some of the most famous pieces of film millinery – they worked alongside Walter Plunkett (costume designer) to create the most amazing hats for Gone With The Wind. After this, success in every venture was guaranteed. Condition is Used – this is in very good vintage condition – there is a small amount of make up staining on the inner band but not enough to get hung up about. The elastic is not as spry as it used to be and depending on how you feel about things, could do with being changed. The hat is glorious and as wearable today as it was then. It has the iconic John Frederics designer label with a “Made in America” flash. This would have cost a king’s ransom back in the day. John Frederics hats are still very much sought after today both by collectors and hat lovers. This one really is a wrench to part with! Please remember that this item is almost 80 years old and as such is a vintage item going towards antique. It may have an odour – which all vintage clothing acquires over time. I do not believe in shoving fabric conditioner sheets in with items – this does run the risk of damage on delicate garments and frankly, I much prefer the honest fragrance of a timeless piece rather than some hideous chemically induced smell. This item has had a previous life and at least two previous owners! If you want something that is pristine, then this item is not for you. Please examine the images carefully before committing yourself and if in any doubt, please ask questions. I do, in the interests of the environment, reuse clean packaging wherever possible. Normally be Hermes and is sent signed for. I rarely use the post office unless for a very small parcel.
