Original late 1930s/Early 1940s WWII Black Hat. This hat is from my own personal collection, which has been exhibited in Museums, Fashion Shows and has also appeared on the Antiques Roadshow. Sadly, lack of space is reluctantly forcing sale of part of my collection. This is such an avant garde design that when I first saw it, I thought it was a hat from about the 50s. After loads of painstaking research comparing this to other designers of the time, I found that this wasn’t so and it came from the 30s/40s period. The label is intriguing – showing two stylised hat wearers in high Art Deco style but Francois Modes is difficult to track down! It should be, as this designer had style in spades. This hat are one size fits all – and are really flattering to all face shapes and hair colouring. The hat, I believe, was meant to be worn on the back of the head, a bit like a halo beret. All in all, a highly unusual hat and full of je ne sais quoi! The hat is in good, used vintage condition – there are the ubiquitous make-up marks around the grosgrain inner band – almost every hat I’ve handled from this era has some form of make-up marking from the pancake foundations they used to use – these cannot be seen when the hat is being worn but may bother some people that they are there. Personally, I think it is all part of the hat’s history and have left well alone. You could always try to remove them if you wished, but I would rather leave them than run the risk of damaging a unique hat! Please remember that this item is almost 80 years old and as such is a vintage item going towards antique. It may have an odour – which all vintage clothing acquires over time. I do not believe in shoving fabric conditioner sheets in with items – this does run the risk of damage on delicate garments and frankly, I much prefer the honest fragrance of a timeless piece rather than some hideous chemically induced smell. This item has had a previous life and at least two previous owners! If you want something that is pristine, then this item is not for you. Please examine the images carefully before committing yourself and if in any doubt, please ask questions. I do, in the interests of the environment, reuse clean packaging wherever possible. The carrier will normally be Hermes – I rarely use the post office unless for a small parcel.
