An absolutely magnificent, genuine antique French theatrical headdress. Exquisite, looking like it stepped right out of The Ballet Russe with it crown shape. Or perhaps a Victorian circus! Dense and weighty real gold metallic gilt bullion, a crown shape, with thousands of hand sewn gold and copper glass beads. Two huge and extra fluffy and thick black ostrich plume bouquets tower upwards for pure drama and bouncing movement, with 3 smaller plumes at the base. A silk faille base with silk corded loop ties. A grand example of Orientalism and costuming. Dates to circa 1914 to 1920. From the estate of a French actress who performed on the stage in Paris before WWI and into the 1920s. Right from the Moulin Rouge or Folies Bergere, but I keep seeing it from Madame Butterfly or some Exotic Opera or Ballet. Much like the Oriental and Persian inspired costume designed by Leon Bakst for the ballet. This is from a theatrical stage number where several women wore similar headdresses, each one slightly different. This would make a once in a lifetime gift for that special someone. I show the hat on a full sized millinery head, the head is not included. The silk braid kept sliding off my ceramic models head so I gave her a fluffy wig. It needs support, it is a little weighty from the trims. So you will want to add some support to keep it on place. OR if you wear this with a curly, frizzy or poufy wig, or your won hair, the hair should support the weight somewhat. Please ask if you need more details.
