EARLY 1900s EDWARDIAN LOT OF TWO LADIES HATS
EARLY 1900s EDWARDIAN LOT OF TWO LADIES HATS. Two summery antique 1900 – 1918’s ladies hats. These 2 hats were worn on top of the head and would have been held in place with a hat pin. Left hat is a black horsehair straw netting over wire ribs in construction, trimmed with millinery flowers on one side. Woven black horsehair straw in intricate designs circling around crown. There is a adjustable black silk lining inside the hat, and a black velvet inner band. Right hat is constructed over wire ribs with a net background for support of flowers. Trimmed with an assortment of colorful millinery flowers. MATERIAL TYPE Horsehair straw netting and millinery flowers. ERA: 1900 – 1918. CONDITION These two hats are in very good sturdy condition. Straw braids are in very good condition for their age, no breaks in straw. Millinery flowers in good condition. Flowers could use a steaming to refresh. Both hats in original condition no alterations. A great addition to one’s hat collection and both in wearable condition. The first hat on left: There is a adjustable black silk inside lining that has detached in places. The hat is in overall very good structural condition. No holes, no repairs, and no broken horsehair netting. The black thread stitches holding the horsehair bands together have oxidized into brown threads. Some of the horsehair bands need a few stitches to place bands back into shape as well as changed to a brown color in places. The threads have become weak from oxidation.
