From the 1870s or 1880s, a Victorian shallow bonnet in lush black velvet with black and purple silk and ostrich feathers and a cut-steel buckle embellishment. The addition of a bit of purple to an all-black ensemble was considered appropriate during late mourning. Long velvet ribbons to tie beneath your chin or leave flowing down your back. Fully lined in cotton. Lots of hand stitching throughout. It sits at the back of the head rather than on top, so you’ll need a hat pin or two to hold it on. The feathers are sound but delicate, some of the velvet nap has rubbed away although this is only evident on close inspection (see lightened image for detail). Hat is about 9″ (22.5cm) tall, each ribbon is 29″ long x2 wide (73.5x5cm) hat sits at the back of the head, so one size fits all. You’ll need a hat pin to secure it.
