VICTORIAN LATE 1860S STRAW RIDING HAT W SILK TRIMS. DATING TO THE LATE 1860S. A VERY RARE FIND. FASHIONED OF A STIFFENED BASE THAT IS SEALED IN BUCKRAM ON THE INTERIOR WITH A THIN SILK COVERING THE BRIM. LAYERS OF SCALLOP STRAW RUN UP THE CROWN AND ARE ON THE EDGE OF THE BRIM WITH THE BRIM EDGE HAVING POINTED SAWTOOTH HORSE HAIR TIPS. SILK TAFFETA RIBBON TWISTS AND ENCIRCLES THE CROWN WITH A BOW IN THE REAR WITH RUCHED SILK FAILLE ATOP THE HAT WITH ORNATE HORSEHAIR RUNNING DOWN THE MIDDLE AND A GLAZED ECRU RIBBON WITH GLASS BEAD WORK DETAIL SET OFF TO THE ANGLE ON THE TOP OF THE HEAD. THE INTERIOR IS PAPER ON THE INSIDE CROWN AND HAS THE ORIGINAL PAPER LABEL. AGE COLOR SEEN WITH SPATTERED AGE STAINING AROUND THE INNER BRIM. THE WIRED EDGE IS BEGINNING TO POKE THROUGH AT A TINY POINT ON THE FRONT UNDER SIDE BRIM WITH SOME SCATTERED AGE SPOTTING SEEN TO THE TOP WITH AGE DISCOLORATION FAINT ON THE RIBBONS AS WELL AS ON THE SILK FAILLE.
