Mid-Century Modern Yellow Velvet Hat, Seed Shell Embellished, By PHIL STRANN. VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN HAT. Interesting and unusual mid-century modern yellow velvet fabric cap style women’s hat measuring about 21″ around the inside grosgrain ribbon trimmed interior, 8″ wide and 8-1/2 deep from to back. Featuring embellished rows of tiny seed shells accenting the wide border, shells are disk shape and have a natural iridescence – they are individually mounted with Czech glass trumpet beads as shown. Hat top has darts around the crown to assist in a close fit and hat is intended to be worn slightly to the back of the head – interior is lined with a stiffening fabric and there is faint wire cased underneath the inside edge to assist in fit. Bearing the AN ORIGINAL PHIL STRANN CALIFORNIA label, hat dates 1950s and is so avant garde in design. Condition is very nice with minor crushing to the velvet form from storage – I currently have it stuffed with tissue paper for display – think a light steam would take out any residual creasing. There is one minute hole on top and a coordinating hole on the front edge by one tiny shell – this is the result of inserting a hat pin for wear – other than the discoloration to the interior netting material and a hint of usage, I find no damage – all shells are complete with no breakage or damage amazing!
